Work Canteen Redecoration

Project overview

Redecoration of a work canteen and adjoining kitchen area at a live industrial site. Areas were sectioned off and worked through in turn so employees could continue to use the room for their breaks while the redecoration progressed around them.

The challenge

The room was in daily use and could not be closed. The kitchen ceiling had also discoloured to a heavy yellow from years of cooking grease and steam, which would have bled through any new paint if it had simply been coated over.

Site constraints

• Canteen remained in use by staff throughout the works
• Works sectioned off and phased to avoid disruption at break times
• Grease-contaminated kitchen ceiling requiring degreasing before coating
• Room left clean and tidy at the end of every shift

Our approach

Professional paint systems were applied throughout to give a hard-wearing, easily cleaned finish suited to a busy welfare area. Work moved section by section, with each area reinstated and handed back before the next was set up, keeping seating available at all times.

Preparation and delivery

Surfaces were filled and sanded to take out damage and imperfections and leave a smooth, even base for decoration. The kitchen ceiling was thoroughly degreased before any coating went on, and fixtures, furniture and floors were protected and masked in each sectioned-off area.

System

Trade-grade wall and ceiling coatings were specified for washability and durability in a food and welfare environment, with the previously yellowed kitchen ceiling degreased and coated to bring it back to a clean, uniform white.

Result

The canteen is a noticeably brighter, cleaner space with a smooth, hard-wearing finish and a kitchen ceiling restored to white. The works were completed tidily and with no disruption to employees taking their breaks.
