Recoating of pitchside handrails and metalwork across all four lower stands at Portman Road in Ipswich, Suffolk.
Ipswich Town Football Club asked J&L Maintenance to prepare and recoat the perimeter handrails and associated metalwork at all four lower stands, including the access platforms and steps. The existing coating was worn and chipped from years of use. Work ran on a day rate, stand by stand, across daytime, evening and weekend shifts, timed to finish before the new season's opening fixture.
The metalwork was in normal worn condition, chipped and degraded from general use. The stands are part of a live, occupied stadium, and work was restricted to non-matchday, non-event days with the stands closed to spectators, players and the public while each section was in progress. The programme had to fit around the fixture calendar with a hard deadline before the first match of the season.
Each of the four lower stands was worked in turn, using the stadium's own platforms and fixed steps as the place of work, with podium steps and hop-ups brought in only for the highest handrail sections. Each stand was checked, cleaned down and handed back to the club at the end of the shift. To meet the deadline before the season opener, the team worked days and evenings, fitting around other time-restricted work also being finished on site before matchday.
Surfaces were prepared by hand with scrapers, abrasive pads and wire brushes, moving to powered sanders and wire brushes only where hand tools weren't enough to get back to a sound, clean, keyed surface. Seating, treads, nosings and surrounding finishes were sheeted off below and around each work section throughout.
Prepared steel was primed with Tikkurila RM40, brush and roller applied, followed by a Temadur 50 topcoat, also brush and roller applied, chosen to stand up to heavy handling and footfall through a season.
All four lower stands had their perimeter handrails and metalwork stripped back, primed and topcoated in time for the season's opening match, with each stand cleaned down, and handed back to the club section by section as work progressed.
