Office Block Redecoration

Project overview

External redecoration of an office building in Diss, Norfolk, carried out through the summer months to take advantage of settled weather and good drying conditions. The existing scheme was an old, dull blue that had lost its life, and the client wanted a brighter, cleaner finish that lifted the whole building.

The challenge

The previous coatings had failed in places and could not simply be painted over. Every area of loose, flaking and unsound coating had to be identified and prepared back before any new paint went on, and the building's varied elevations, high-level trims and lamp posts all needed safe access.

Site constraints

• Failed and flaking previous coatings across multiple elevations
• Mixed substrates: timber, metal handrails, gutters, lamp posts and trims
• High-level and awkward access requiring tower scaffold and MEWP
• Works carried out around a building in normal office use

Our approach

A range of access was used to reach every elevation and detail safely, including tower scaffold and MEWP for high-level trims, gutters and lamp posts. Works were sequenced elevation by elevation so each area was prepared, primed and top coated before moving on.

Preparation and delivery

All failed coatings were prepped down and removed, with surfaces sanded and abraded back to a sound, well-keyed base. Timber areas were made good, metalwork was cleaned back where corrosion or coating failure was present, and all surfaces were cleaned down before priming.

System

All wooden areas and metal handrails, gutters, lamp posts and trims were primed and then top coated in the new bright blue, with appropriate primers specified for timber and metal substrates to give proper adhesion and long-term durability outdoors.

Result

The office block has gone from a dull, tired blue to a bright, uniform new blue that gives the building far more life and a much sharper presence for staff and visitors arriving on site.
