Industrial Crane Restoration & Coating

Project overview

Restoration and recoating of an industrial crane in Ipswich. The structure was fully washed down, prepared and recoated to bring it back to a clean, well-protected finish and extend its working life in an exposed outdoor environment.

The challenge

Years of exposure had left the coatings tired and losing their protective value. The crane carries a large amount of intricate detail - brackets, fixings, hydraulics and tight corners - all of which needed careful attention rather than broad-brush coverage.

• Working at height and around the crane structure
• High expectation on finish quality and consistency

Our approach

Works were sequenced section by section so each area was fully prepared, primed and top coated before moving on. The many intricate areas were cut in and touched in by hand with great detail, ensuring full coverage into corners, around fixings and across hydraulic components.

Preparation and delivery

The crane was completely washed using a pressure washer to remove dirt, grease and surface contamination. Surfaces were then sanded and abraded to remove unsound coating and provide a sound, well-keyed base, with all areas cleaned down and dried before primer was applied.

System

A Tikkurila RM40 primer was applied, followed by Tikkurila Temadur 20 as the top coat. This combination gives strong adhesion over prepared steel and excellent resistance to the harsh conditions the crane is exposed to day to day.

The crane looks and performs like a far newer asset: a clean, uniform finish with well-protected steelwork and crisp detail throughout. A genuinely satisfying result, delivered to a high professional standard.
